American Enviromental Photographs 1891-1936

Images from The University of Chicago Library.
«This collection consists of approximately 4,500 photographs documenting natural environments, ecologies, and plant communities in the United States at the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century. Produced between 1891 and 1936 by a group of American botanists generally regarded as one of the most influential in the development of modern ecological studies, these photographs provide an overview of important representative natural landscapes across the nation. They demonstrate the character of a wide range of American topography, its forestation, aridity, shifting coastal dune complexes, and watercourses. Comparison of early photographs with later views highlights changes resulting from natural alterations of the landscape, disturbances from industry and development, and effective natural resource usage. The photographs were taken by Henry Chandler Cowles (1869-1939), George Damon Fuller (1869-1961), and other Chicago ecologists on field trips across the North American continent.»

En peligro de extinción

Diario El Mundo.

Expedition to Costa Rica

Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.
«This project, funded by the National Science Foundation, focuses on the study of nudibranch mollusks of Costa Rica. It is a collaborative, international effort to train students to become professional systematic biologists and to increase the public’s understanding and protection of the rich biodiversity of Costa Rica, which is not completely known. Additionally, we hope to help people better understand what nudibranchs are, why they are important, and how systematic research is done. The project also shows the excitement and challenges of doing scientific fieldwork and discovering new species, while showcasing the field expedition of a diverse team of scientists, educators, students and a videographer. We hope that this project will inspire young students from many backgrounds to consider a career in systematic biology as they better understand the work that systematic biologists undertake, why that work is important and the urgent need for such scientists.»

«How can we find ways to meet our current economic and social needs without compromising the ability of our children, and our children's children, to do the same? Our success will depend on understanding the difference between

- Unsustainable practices: "quick fixes" that fill an immediate need for resources. Over time, however, these practices deplete or damage natural resources so they cannot be used or enjoyed by future generations.»

Museo A Come Ambiente

Oceanography in Atlantic Canada

Canada's Digital Collections. Government of Canada.
« Throughout history, the ocean has played an integral role in shaping the identity of Atlantic Canadians. It was the mainstay of the first people on this land, the Aboriginals; it brought the first Viking explorers, as well as later adventurers, to our shores; it lured the first Western European settlers here with its rich bounty of fish. Even today, the people of this region use the ocean as a source of transportation, recreation, employment, and food; and also as a source of inspiration for their songs, stories, poems, paintings and carvings. If you visit any fishing village along our coastline you will see, hear and taste the impact this rich resource has on their lives. No other force has shaped this region's culture and people as much as the ocean.»

Ontario Streams Restoration

Canada's Digital Collections. Government of Canada.
«In this era, economic growth and sustainable development bring to mind the contradictions of how we, as a society, think of the Ontario landscape and its natural resources. We need to understand how human actions have impacted the environment in order to predict what our impact will be in the future. This perspective requires comprehensive land use planning; and the solutions formed consider all users of natural resources. This is commonly referred to as an ecosystem approach where economic, social, physical, natural and cultural interests are considered connected and integrated into a comprehensive land use plan. The entire drainage network of a river, or watershed, is a natural geographic unit that represents a functioning ecosystem.»
