It should not come as a surprise since the mountains of Mexico and Guatemala are considered the home of origin for today's dahlia ancestors. 16th century Spanish conquistadors, while busy conquering the vast Aztec Indian nation, also made some interesting explorations-one of which was the collection of New World plant life. Botanist accompanying the soldiers discovered what is sometimes referred to as the tree dahlia(D. imperialis). The flowers of this species were open-centered, single blooms with pendant stems. The hollow stems of these plants, some growing to over 20 feet, were often used for hauling water or as an actual source of water to traveling hunters. In fact the Aztec name for "tree dahlias" was acocotli or water-cane.»

Aril irises are native to the Middle East and grow in Israel, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Turkey, and some southern republics of the former Soviet Union. Aril irises get their name from the creamy white collar (or "aril") on their seeds. Botanically, they are members of the Oncocyclus and Regelia subsections of the genus Iris. They are regarded by many as the most exotic and beautiful irises in the world. Unfortunately, they can be difficult to grow outside their native climate.»

Arilbred irises are the result of breeding aril irises with the more commonly grown bearded irises. This breeding has involved mostly tall bearded irises, but dwarf and median irises have been used as well. The arilbreds are as diverse in color and form and as they are in genetic makeup. The combinations of color, size, and form make this an exciting and challenging group of irises. Unlike their aril ancestors, arilbreds can be grown successfully in a wide range of climates. They give gardeners the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of aril-type flowers without having to provide the special environment the pure arils require.»

The interactions of new understanding brought a need for consultation, cooperation, and publication so specialized scientific societies were founded and burgeoned over the 20th Century. The 1930's brought changes and new areas of research and development despite the rigors of the depression years, e.g., increased awareness of bacterial physiology, the cultivation of influenza virus, and the sulfonamides. After 1945, research activities accelerated remarkably due in part to the stimulus from wartime and the solution of problems by interdisciplinary cooperation. A remarkable decade, 1945-1955, resulted with a burgeoning of novel researches and discoveries, to which we owe the present-day excitements in molecular biology, and an infusion of young scientists of varied backgrounds becoming aware of new biological fields to conquer.»

Sargent II (USA) became the first President. The motivation of the foundation of ISB was to bring together scientists working in the field of Biometeorology, who are interested in environmental and ecological problems. At that time the general interest in these issues was developing all over the world and the scientists in these fields were rather isolated. The purpose of ISB today is to provide one international organization for the promotion of interdisciplinary collaboration of meteorologists, physicians, physicists, biologists, climatologists, ecologists and other scientists and to promote the development of Biometeorology. ISB is based on individual membership. Membership is open to all persons with academic training and degree.»
