«Quantum Theory of Many-Particle Systems: Many-Body techniques, often combined with finite temperature formulations, are applied to understand behaviour of atomic and molecular systems at the nano and meso-scale, at which quantum size effects play a significant role. Research work involves the study of Ground-state properties, such as Equilibrium structures, Electronic structure, Static Polarizabilities, etc., as well as Excited-state properties, such as the response of these nano-systems to external electromagnetic probes. Phase transitions and Structural stability of extended systems built out of these nano-units are also studied. Techniques involve first principles formulations, such as Density Functional Theory or the GW-Bethe-Salpeter Equation approach, as well as effective models, such as Extended Tight-Binding, or Extended Hückel. Simulations involve the execution of large computer programs, often parallelized, as well as the development of efficient algorithms of global optimization.»
