Savage Ancient Seas

Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.
«During the Cretaceous Period, other continents were also covered by shallow seas, including parts of South America, much of Europe and Russia, and northern and central Africa.»

Savage Earth

PBS Online.
«Although it feels solid and hard beneath our feet, the outer surface of the Earth is a thin crust of fragile rock, fractured like the cracked shell of an egg. The pieces of the shell are Earth's tectonic plates -- there are 12 major ones -- and they float across a layer of soft rock like rafts in a stream, their motions driven by forces generated deep in the Earth. At their boundaries, the plates spread apart, converge, and slide past one another.»

University of Cambridge , Department of Earth Sciences.
«Discover fossils, rocks and minerals from around the world and explore more than 550 million years of Earth's history.»
Reino Unido

The Cryosphere

National Snow and Ice Data Center.
«Here's where you can learn about the cryosphere, including snow, glaciers, ice shelves and icebergs, arctic climatology, and more.
For a general introduction to the cryosphere, read about the different forms of snow and ice that make up the frozen part of the Earth in "Cold Facts: Earth's Snow, Ice, and Frozen Soils."»

The Dynamic Earth

National Museum of Natural History. Smithsonian Institution.
«Earth's history is written on pages of stone. Since our planet's birth 4.6 billion years ago, rocks have been continually forming and, over time, changing from one kind to another. Every rock preserves part of this ancient and ongoing story.»

The Nature of Diamonds

American Museum of Natural History.
«Diamond is carbon in its most concentrated form. Except for trace impurities like boron and nitrogen, diamond is composed solely of carbon, the chemical element that is fundamental to all life.
But diamond is distinctly different from its close cousins the common mineral graphite and lonsdaleite, both of which are also composed of carbon. Why is diamond the hardest surface known while graphite is exceedingly soft? Why is diamond transparent while graphite is opaque and metallic black? What is it that makes diamond so unique?»

Virtual Museum of Quebec Minerals

Canada's Digital Collections. Government of Canada.
«The quest for minerals began when humans first realized that stones could be fashioned into tools and that tools made life much easier. Today, entire industries have been created around minerals and whole sectors of the economy depend entirely on the wealth produced by the activities both directly and indirectly related to minerals.
In the Montreal area, two locations have earned a world reputation, either because of the abundance of minerals or because of the rare minerals found there. These are the Poudrette and the Demix quarries in Mont St. Hilaire and the Francon quarry in St. Michel. The minerals found at these locations are featured on this site.»
