What Are Dinosaurs?

The Manitoba Museum.
«Dinosaurs were a group of land-dwelling creatures that lived during the Mesozoic Era (about 230-65 million years ago). They included very large and small animals; meat-eaters, plant-eaters, and scavengers. However, all dinosaurs shared certain characteristics of their skulls and hips.
Dinosaurs have been classified into two major groups, primarily on the basis of the structure of their pelvic (hip) bones. The Saurischians were "lizard-hipped" dinosaurs, which had hip bone arrangements similar to that of most modern reptiles. The Ornithischians were "bird-hipped" dinosaurs which had pelvises resembling those of birds.»

Whitby Museum

Whitby Literary & Philosophical Society.
«The palaeontology & geology collection consists mainly (98% of collection) of fossils. There are an outstanding set of saurians (fossil marine reptiles) mounted on the wall which include several ichthyosaurs, a plesiosaur and a teleosaurus (crocodile) as well as slabs of rock with dinosaur footprints. These larger specimens and most of the smaller fossils come from the Lower and Middle Jurassic. Many of the smaller fossils, particularly ammonites and belemnites, are of international importance since many are "type" specimens : that is the original specimens that gave rise to the names used by palaeontologists today.»
