Kalvar, Richard

Magnum Photos.
«Richard Kalvar is a dauntless explorer of parallel universes, closely resembling our everyday one but different, darker, funnier. His unposed pictures start with reality and move on from there.
Born in and raised in New York, Kalvar studied English literature at Cornell University from 1961 to 1965. He was then inexplicably hired in New York as an assistant to French fashion photographer Jérôme Ducrot , and discovered his passion for photography a year later during and extended trip to Europe.»

Karsh, Yousuf (1908-2002)

George Eastman House.
«In 1922, Yousuf Karsh's family fled their home in Armenia to avoid Turkish persecution. Two years later the Karsh family sent their son Yousuf to live with an uncle in Canada. Here Karsh learned the basics of photography from his uncle, a professional photographer. When Karsh became a serious student he was sent to Boston to learn from his uncle’s friend, John H. Garo. While this apprenticeship was to only last for six months, Karsh stayed for three years learning the technical aspects of photography.»

Kensington Alive: A pictorial history of Kensington Market in Toronto

Canada's Digital Collections. Government of Canada.
«The history of Kensington Market has tremendous significance for the City of Toronto and Canada. You will find information on such historic figures as the Denison family, and illustrations which date back before Confederation.
Kensington Market is one of the oldest parts of the City of Toronto, with many of the houses and institutions built in the 1800s. The City of Toronto’s first Bell Centre building was in Kensington, along with one of the first fire halls – and the first to have a motorized fire engine.»

Koudelka, Josef

Magnum Photos.
«Born in a tiny village of Moravia, Koudelka began photographing his family and surroundings as a teenager with a 6 x 6 Bakelite camera.
He was trained at the Technical University in Prague and worked as an aeronautical engineer in Prague and Bratislava from 1961-67. He had been able to obtain an old Rolleiflex and in 1961, while working as a theater photographer in Prague, he also started a detailed study of the gypsies of Slovakia, who were then undergoing further attempts to "assimilate" them within the Czech state.»

La Tropical

By David Turnley.
The Digital Journalist.
«In 1997, working as a photographer for Life magazine, I went to Cuba with Muhammad Ali. We had the opportunity to connect very quickly with the heart and soul of the Cuban people for whom Muhammad Ali is a hero. I was enchanted by the sensuality, the pathos, the exuberance, the tension, and the incredible visual quality of Cuba.»

La creciente

José Manuel Navia. Portal FotoForum.net

Landscapes of Myth

John Paul Getty Museum.
«Greece is one of the most?and least?illustrated lands, at once a place of myth and a mythologized place. This exhibition presents maps and travel books, paintings, theatrical scenery, prints, and photographs, all of which created strong visual traditions for the ways that Greece, past and present, was depicted and understood. The works range from the late 1400s to the end of the 1800s, a period when ancient stories and their settings were rediscovered and became an essential part of European culture.»

Lansdowne Road

By Robert Appleby. 2000.
The Digital Journalist.
«Lansdowne Road is a short street in downtown Bombay, which runs from the 5-star Taj Mahal Hotel to Regal Circle, one of South Bombay's main roundabouts. The area is full of tourists, both foreign and Indian, who come to visit the Gateway of India, a large monumental arch built at the beginning of the last century. It is also where many street people come to try to make a living from the tourists. As well as the street people from all over India there is a large settlement of Pardhis, members of one of the so-called Criminal Tribes, ethnic groups who were "notified" by the British as having a genetic or cultural disposition to crime.»

Latvian Museum of Photography

«It is a national institution by the importance of the objects it conserves the research for a national identity, to rediscover past. It is hoped that a growing number of international visitors will find that the concerns of this country and its government are not just those of mercantile strength, technological ingenuity or ethnic selfadmiration.
The Museum answers the need for the collection, preservation and exhibition of national photographic values. Its research is directed into the history of Latvian photography as an inseparable and unique component of Latvian ethnic culture and into its role as part of the overall evolution of photography in the world.»

Lewis Wickes Hine's "Work Portraits"

New York Public Library.
«The worker was always a favorite theme of Hine's and he believed that the emerging modern technologies of the 1920's and 1930's would lift the burden of hard labor from them. Hine began in the 1920's a series of photographs he called "Work Portraits" which showed man and machine at work together. Perhaps his best known series from this group is his commission to document the construction of the Empire State Building from March 1930 to May 1931. At the conclusion of the project Hine published Men at Work, a picture book which summarized his theme.»

Arriving at a makeshift landing strip, a jeep was waiting to drive us through the mountains to Kabul, about two hours away.»

Lobo Altuna: del mirar de frente

Centro Virtual Cervantes.

«Every month nine thousand unmarried couples arrive in Las Vegas and depart married-happily, one presumes. Magnum, essays sur le monde

Bibliothèque Nationale de France. Expositions Virtuelles.
