Do You Believe? A Ghostly Gallery

American Photography Museum.
«The first ghosts in photographs were the result of accidents. During a long exposure--such as those required in photography's infancy--a person who stood still would register as clearly as a building. But a person who moved out of camera range after only a portion of the exposure was completed would instead appear as a see-through blur. It happened with the lamplighter in this detail from a photograph by the London Stereoscopic Company.»

Drawing the Western Frontier. The James E. Taylor Album

National Museum of Natural History. Smithsonian Institution.
«Of the many photographic albums in the National Anthropological Archives, perhaps the most interesting and historically important is a scrapbook kept by an American illustrator, James E. Taylor (1839-1901). A professional artist, Taylor’s newspaper illustrations served to popularize stereotypes of the Western frontier during the post-Civil War years. Like other illustrators and writers of the period, he depicted Indian-White relations in terms of savagery versus civilization and encouraged Americans to visualize the nation’s Westward expansion in heroic terms. In many ways, Taylor’s professional legacy as a "reporter" is lodged between the technological juncture that existed between newspaper publishing and photography in the 19th century.»

Early Photographs from the Museum's Collection

Museum of the History of Science, Oxford.
«Just over a hundred and fifty years ago, an idea which had been familiar to many different people for some time became a practical reality. In January 1839, after several decades of experiments to create an enduring image through the action of light on sensitized surfaces, two processes that had been invented independently in the 1830s were announced to the public. Images could be made to 'draw' themselves and a visual medium was born that changed the world as far as humans perceived it.»

Earth from Space provides several ways to search the selected images. Each image is available in three resolutions and includes cataloging data and a caption. However, this site contains only a small selection of the best of our Earth photography...»

Edward S. Curtis's The North American Indian: Photographic Images

Library of Congress.
«The North American Indian by Edward S. Curtis is one of the most significant and controversial representations of traditional American Indian culture ever produced. Issued in a limited edition from 1907-1930, the publication continues to exert a major influence on the image of Indians in popular culture. Curtis said he wanted to document "the old time Indian, his dress, his ceremonies, his life and manners." In over 2000 photogravure plates and narrative, Curtis portrayed the traditional customs and lifeways of eighty Indian tribes. The twenty volumes, each with an accompanying portfolio, are organized by tribes and culture areas encompassing the Great Plains, Great Basin, Plateau Region, Southwest, California, Pacific Northwest, and Alaska. Featured here are all of the published photogravure images including over 1500 illustrations bound in the text volumes, along with over 700 portfolio plates.»

Empire: Impressions from China

By James Whitlow Delano. January 2005.
The Digital Journalist.
«To observe a society in a snapshot of time can create a false impression. Erasing the past is nothing new to China. The Communist Revolution and the nightmare of the Cultural Revolution are two recent examples of such iconoclastic behavior. What is different now is the scale and concentration of the effort. It is distilled in its purity and awe-inspiring for its totality.»

Extreme Asia. The photographs of Philip Blenkinsop

December 2004.
The Digital Journalist.
«Early last year photographer Philip Blenkinsop, along with Time magazine reporter Andrew Perrin, trekked out of the jungle in northern Laos to reach a special mountain hideaway that revealed the sad aftermath of the Vietnam War. Hmong guerrillas had fought under the direction of the CIA against Communist forces. When America pulled out of the war, they left behind the fighters and their families. Now three decades later, these fighters were still on the run, being hunted by the Thai military. As Blenkinsop and Perrin approached the village, more than 850 of the former American allies sank to their knees and raised their hands in supplication. They hoped the journalists were the vanguard of their being remembered and saved.»

Bringing together for the first time more than five hundred cultural artifacts and presenting them as the public first encountered them, the exhibition tracks how, since photography's invention in 1839, the representation and the meaning of fame in Western culture, and most particularly in America, have been changed by the medium we now all take for granted.»

Faux Snow

American Photography Museum.
«In northern climates, Winter can be a very trying season-- and just imagine the icy winds of January in the days before central heat and Florida vacations. Winter presented special technical problems for Victorian-era photographers; their chemicals did not always behave properly in freezing temperatures, and processes of the day were unable to capture snowflakes in mid-air. So what the photographers could not accomplish in nature, they simulated indoors, under their studio skylights. From shortly after the Civil War until the end of the 19th century, these winter tableaux were made in cities large and small-- for a public that never seemed to tire of donning cold weather garb for a portrait with faux snow.»

«The enormity of what we have achieved with the "Five Thousand Days" project has yet to truly sink in, but those members of the British Press Photographers' Association who have seen the proofs for the book are starting to realize just how far we have come in under two years.
The BPPA may have been formed in 1984, but it laid dormant between 1991 and 2003, when six photographers sitting in a Fleet Street bar decided to "get the band back together" to redress the poor image that news photography and news photographers enjoyed both inside and outside the industry here in the United Kingdom.»
