	Photographic Views of Meiji: A Portrait of Old Japan

It was not until the overthrow of the Shogun and his Samurai by imperial forces in 1868 that Japan began to modernize. The reinstatement of full power to the Imperial court and fourteen year old Prince Mutsuhito initiated Japan's period of industrial growth. 	Photographs from the Chicago Daily News
		Library of Congress. «This collection comprises over 55,000 images of urban life captured on glass plate negatives between 1902 and 1933 by photographers employed by the Chicago Daily News, then one of Chicago's leading newspapers. The photographs illustrate the enormous variety of topics and events covered in the newspaper, although only about twenty percent of the images in the collection were published in the newspaper. Most of the photographs were taken in Chicago, Illinois, or in nearby towns, parks, or athletic fields. In addition to many Chicagoans, the images include politicians, actors, and other prominent people who stopped in Chicago during their travels and individual athletes and sports teams who came to Chicago. Le Grand Quartier Général en avait fixé les objectifs dès mai 1915 : " prendre tous clichés intéressants: au point de vue historique (destructions, ruines...), au point de vue de la propagande par l'image à l'étranger, au point de vue des opérations militaires, par la constitution d'archives documentaires. 		American Museum Congo Expedition 1909-1915. «While one of the main goals of the Lang-Chapin Expedition was to gather physical specimens from the Congo for return to the Museum for study and display, the collection of photographic images in the field was also a major objective. The photographic technology of the day required the use of large glass plate negatives with slow film speeds. Thus, it was extremely difficult for expedition members to photograph Congo species, especially fast-moving primates, without capturing them first.» EEUU - inglés

	Richards, Eugene
