«William Hunter made significant purchases of 17th century Italian, Dutch and Flemish masters including work by Rembrandt and Koninck, and the 18th century French painter Chardin. He had his portrait painted by Ramsay, and commissioned animal paintings by Stubbs. Many donors have enriched the collection since Hunter's day. The 19th and 20th century paintings include works by the French Impressionists, the Glasgow Boys and the Scottish Colourists. Contemporary art and sculpture are also represented.»
