«Native people from the mainland visited Spectacle Island primarily to harvest soft-shelled clams and fish for cod. Radiocarbon dates obtained from the site indicate that it was used from about 600 A.D. until 1620 A.D. when Native population was almost entirely destroyed by diseases brought over by European sailors and settlers.»
