«LIP is a technical and scientific non-profit association created in 1986 when Portugal joined CERN as a full member-state. Its main objective is to lead scientific and technological research in the fields of experimental high energy physics and associated instrumentation.
The partners of LIP are, at present, the National Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), the Institute for International Scientific and Technological Co-operation (ICCTI), both under the Ministry of Science and Universities, and the Associação Nacional dos Industriais de Material Eléctrico e Electrónico (ANIMEE).
The LIP activity takes place in the framework of international collaborations, aiming at the execution of experiments, mainly in the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN), in Geneva, Switzerland. Most of the work is done in Portugal (conception of experiments, fundamental research on radiation physics and detectors, technological development and data analysis), whereas all what concerns the direct preparation of experiments and data acquisition takes place at CERN or elsewhere»
