Enlace: http://architectures.home.sapo.pt/ Descripción: «The site of Castanheiro do Vento is located near the village of Horta do Douro, which belongs as Freixo de Numão - to the Vila Nova de Foz Côa municipally. Its study started in 1998. The geographical coordinates of a central point in the site are: 41 3' 49'' Lat. N 7 19' 18'' Long.W Gr. The site is at the top of a roughly circular hill rising to 730m above sea level. This hill extends down to the 680m contour line. As in the case of Castelo Velho, an important part of the hill (and therefore of the prehistoric site) was archaeologically damaged or seriously destroyed by the plantation of eucaliptus, a plague that afected this area in the beginnings of the 90¹s.The hill top, above the 720m contour line, has a geodesic mark (alt.:723 m.) at the southern end, surrounded by ploughed soil. The northern end is a flat and slightly higher plateau, covered with bushes, and here former farmers have heaped up piles of stones which were part of now demolished prehistoric structures. Anyway, these stone "walls" were just the base for the construction of structures in clay, and indeed we may say that the present stony aspect of this site as of Castelo Velho is more an archaeological illusion then the the reality of the site when it was "alive". Probably, the stone was more extensively used at a final phase, when prehistoric people decided to close spaces, and give to the site the aspect of an abandoned, "dead", stony place, contrasting with the former open and clayed "living" areas» |
